Commandos are elite soldiers who are trained in the art of special operations. Their job is to carry out dangerous missions that require discretion, sabotage, or espionage. They make good use of their skills when they embark on a quest to save the world from being ruled by an evil genius. Commandos is a strategy game created by Swedish video game developer Massive Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive, released in October 1999 with an expansion pack released later that year. The game was originally developed for Windows with DOS after-market release in 2000 with most later releases ported for Mac OS 9/OSX up until 2004 when the company's focus shifted to developing games for Microsoft Windows based computers only. The game was re-released with the expansion pack in 2006. Multiplayer online gaming has been supported alongside local multiplayer, but it would only be played at the Sony Entertainment Network Social Space in Redwood City. Commandos continues to be played via social networking channels with an active community of players today. The game is set in the near future, where darkness still reigns over humanity when a new alien race arrives with their own plans for domination. It then tells how this new alien race must be defeated or else mass genocide will occur on Earth. This game is a squad based strategy, and it gets harder every level. The once-peaceful planet of Earth is now under attack by aliens who seek to enslave the human race. To protect this world and all others, the Commandos are born; a new breed of soldier with access to bleeding edge technology and top secret training. The "Invasion" expansion pack was released in 2000. It added 3 new missions (in addition to the original campaign), new weapons such as the X-Ray scanner, pulse cannon and heavy flamethrower, tactical gear such as telesnipers and multi-focal goggles, 10 new multiplay maps and various bug fixes and improvements. The game received "favorable" reviews according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. The editors of "Computer Games Magazine" named "Commandos" the third-best computer game of 1999. It was a runner-up for their list of the year's top action games, and won the readers' choice award for that category. The editors wrote, ""Commandos" will please anyone who enjoys a good strategy/action blend, and those who like their games so realistic they can feel it."In October 2000 Massive Entertainment released an expansion to the original game called ""Invasion: Lost in Time"" which added three new missions set after those of the main campaign. Commandos 2: Men of Courage is a real-time tactics video game for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X and PlayStation 2 released in 2001 by Eidos Interactive. Commandos 2 is set in 1941 on an alternate history World War II where the machine gun has been banned, tank crews are women and armies are made up entirely of commandos.
